Sha’ban,
the runway to Ramadan.

The Prophet ﷺ fasted more of Sha’ban than any month outside Ramadan — calling it the month people are heedless of, the month deeds are raised. The body and tongue Ramadan asks for are built in the thirty days before it. A seven-block runway, with the second half kept light and the 15th treated with care.

Why Sha’ban

Four things the sources are clear on.

  • 01

The month the Prophet ﷺ fasted most outside Ramadan.

Aishah (RA) said: I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complete a fast for a whole month except Ramadan, and I never saw him fast more in any other month than in Sha'ban. The pattern across his life was clear: Sha'ban was almost — but not quite — a second Ramadan of voluntary fasting.

    al-Bukhari 1969; Muslim 1156

  • 02

    The month deeds are raised.

Usamah (RA) asked why so much fasting in Sha'ban. The Prophet ﷺ said: it is a month between Rajab and Ramadan that people are heedless of, and deeds are raised in it to the Lord of the worlds; I love that my deeds be raised while I am fasting.

    al-Nasaʾi 2357

  • 03

Stop new fasts after the 15th.

The Prophet ﷺ said: when the second half of Sha'ban comes, do not fast. The ruling applies to new voluntary fasts; those already in a habit (Mondays/Thursdays, white days, make-ups from last Ramadan) continue. The point is to enter Ramadan with strength, not depletion.

    Abu Dawud 2337; al-Tirmidhi 738

  • 04

    Don’t pre-fast Ramadan.

A separate ruling: the Prophet ﷺ said do not anticipate Ramadan with a fast of one or two days, except for someone who has a regular fast. The day or two before Ramadan are not fasted unless they happen to coincide with a habitual fast.

    al-Bukhari 1914; Muslim 1082

The day

Almost — but not quite — a Ramadan day.

Seven blocks for a typical Sha’ban day. Heavier than a standard week; lighter than a Ramadan day. Clock times are illustrative; the day shifts with your location and season.

Tahajjud — train the muscle for Ramadan

    · Last thirdOptional

The salaf called Sha'ban the runway. The qiyam habit you want to lift at Taraweeh begins now, not on the first night. Even two rakah and witr in the last third — small, regular, building. The body learns the hour while the demand is still light.

    al-Bukhari 1145; Muslim 758

    Fajr, then dhikr until sunrise

    · Pre-dawn

The same post-Fajr sitting the Prophet ﷺ kept every day — a Hajj and umrah in reward, the natural opening for the day’s recitation. Bring Sha'ban into the same shape Ramadan will take.

    al-Tirmidhi 586 (graded hasan)

  3. 9:00

Quran — prepare the tongue for the khatm

    · Forenoon

Read more in Sha'ban than you would in any month except Ramadan. The salaf described Sha'ban as the month of the reciters; Anas (RA) said when Sha'ban began, the people would close their books and turn to the Quran. The tongue Ramadan asks for is built in the month before.

Reported by Ibn Rajab in Latāʾif al-Maʿārif

Dhuhr — and a voluntary fast at its peak

    · Midday

Aishah (RA) said she never saw the Prophet ﷺ fast a whole month except Ramadan, and never saw him fast more in a month than Sha'ban. Pair Mondays and Thursdays with the white days (13th, 14th, 15th); by mid-month, half the days are voluntary fasts.

    al-Bukhari 1969; Muslim 1156

  5. 15:30
    2 hr
    05

Asr — istighfar, sadaqah, raising the deeds

    · Afternoon

Usamah ibn Zayd (RA) asked the Prophet ﷺ about his fasting in Sha'ban. He ﷺ said: it is a month people overlook, between Rajab and Ramadan; deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds in it, and I love that my deed be raised while I am fasting.

    al-Nasaʾi 2357 (graded hasan)

  6. 18:00
    30 min
    06

    Maghrib — iftar if fasting

    · Dusk

Break the fast at the call to Maghrib. Pray Maghrib, then a light meal. Continue the recitation across the evening — the rhythm Ramadan will demand is still being trained.

    al-Bukhari 1957 (hasten the iftar)

  7. 22:00
    30 min
    07

    Isha, then early sleep

    · Night

Pray Isha, then the pre-sleep adhkar, then sleep early. The Sha'ban night is for repair, not late conversation — the body that sleeps early is the body that can stand at Tahajjud, and that body is the body Ramadan needs.

al-Bukhari 568 (early sleep after Isha)

A careful note

The 15th night — what the sources actually say.

The narrations specific to the 15th night of Sha'ban range from graded weak to hasan; none reach the strength of the Laylat al-Qadr texts. The cautious position the major Sunni schools have settled on: extra worship that night — general qiyam, sincere dua, Quran — is acceptable on its own merit. What is avoided: ritual protocols specific to this night not established in the Sunnah, designated communal liturgies, and treating it as a fixed annual ʿīd. The night is reserved as a quiet, individual exertion; it is not advertised the way Ramadan’s last ten are.

Cautious position drawn from Ibn Rajab, Ibn Taymiyyah and the major madhāhib

Train the month before the month.

Mondays and Thursdays placed automatically; the white days surfaced from sighting. A Quran target that scales toward Ramadan. The second-half cut-off respected. Then the transition into the Ramadan plan when the moon is sighted. Solah is the scaffolding for the month most apps don’t even mark.
